How will you know when you've got it?

How do you define whether or not your site is "successful"? Total number of visitors? Hardly relevant—unless your business model is based on selling advertising space on your site. Total sales? Total leads? Sales (and/or leads) from your site as a proportion of sales from all sources? What kind of proportion would define "success"?

What kind of time frame is realistic for this measurement? It's not going to be an overnight phenomenon; six months? Twelve?
